Locked? Protected? Not Grouped

I built a small calendar a few weeks ago and now I want to edit it. But it
won't let me! Imagine a single week- row of "days" over a row of "dates". I
can edit the dates but when I try to delete the whole text box, everything
deletes. I check and it's not grouped. The odd thing is if I click anywhere
I'll get small circles at the outside corners and midpoints of the week plus
small grey circles with an x in it on the day I happen to click on. Does
anyone know what's going on here?

Not without more details on how you went about creating the calendar. And which
version of Word is involved.

FWIW, I usually use a table to create calendars...
