Ok do the opposite. Insert 256 take out 512

If you have altered BIOS in anyway set it back to defaults!

If u can try the 512 in an other machine do so.

If yours works witout 512 you could well have a faulty stick

You may well have yes. Try it in another machine first, make sure original memory is out and only the 512 is in before you turn it on

use only the 512 ... enter the BIOS, do nothing, save and reboot ... may or may not work. :)

as with all "help" here at PCR you should at least tell us some basic specs of your PC & OS

Check the latency timings of both sticks, and check BIOS to check it is running at the slowest of the two sticks..

As murdoch so rightly said ... it is a comcrap.

I think I'm right in that you can only use a 256 stick ... the fact that you have 133 should not make a difference, well not with a 'normal' PC ... 133 is backward compatible with 100.

You should consult with Crucial Memory but I had no luck finding your model. Maybe you can?

Mucks is correct - you can only use 128 or 256MB sticks up to a maximum of 768MB in total.

You have 3 available slots, and will need to get 2 x 256 sticks to give you your 512 - you could then add a further 256 in the future to take you to the max.

Have a look at the Crucial page HERE for the correct modules for your system:thumb:

According to what was pulled out of computer. It is a 5108us. ,But Compaq says that it's a 5315ks. I has 3 Dimms128,256mb-1dimm:512-2dimms What does that mean exactly? It also says 512 MB PC100 SyncDram,Max cap 794MB

I can't find any reference to a 5315ks.

Regarding the the '512-2dimms', I would suggest it is saying that if you want 512MB of RAM you need to use 2 Dimms - i.e. 2 x 256MB.

Therefore the original recommendation in my post above still stands:thumb:

I installed 2-256 sticks & the computer still locks up. I tried just adding 1 stick & it still locks up as well. I'm at a loss now. I can put the known good stick in any slot & it works. The sticks that I try to put in are new sticks.

you'll be lucky to find any ram that works with that PC ...

Your "problem" is not the memory ... I'm sad to say it is the Compac, no two are the same ... my advice to check with crucial still stands, and buy off Crucial ... if you did then Crucial will take the mem back.

I have had too many dealings with Comcraps, so much so that I refuse point blank to 'work' on them ... sorry, I'm not guiding my comments at you, but Comcrap.

Get hold of HP, if you can, they now produce, err, still churn out these rubbish PCs, and ask them ... but I think you are peeing into the wind.

Sorry again to be so negative, but I would resign to using an older version of Windows, that will run quite happily on 256, or buy a new, non-branded, PC ;)

It is a Kingston KTM0055/256 3.3 v 168 pin
I've put that model No. in at the Kingston site, and clicked on compatability - and it only lists IBM and Lenovo models.

I could not find either the 5108us or 5315ks listed - can you tell us how you selected that module?

As Mucks says, and as I linked for you earlier on in this thread - use the RAM suggested at the Crucial site - they guarantee compatability or your money back :thumb:
