Is it possible in XP to lock the position of icons on the Desktop, so that
the preferred order is retained even after closing Windows and turning off
the computer?

Right click on the desktop, "Arrange Icons By" and uncheck "Auto
Arrange". I don't have any of the top 4 items selected either, don't
know if that's necessary.

Thanks for the tip, but I have all those options unselected (except "align
to grid") and yet the icons still move. . .
