Moving DeskTop Icons

I would like to place the icons on my DeskTop in a certain position and
order. I do this by draging them into the desired position and then move
off the desk top. When I return to the desktop the icons have return to a
seemingly random position.

Is there a way to lock the icons in the position I arrange them ?

Am using Windows XP (SP2) on a laptop.

Right click on your desktop select icons, and unselect auto arrange

If you right click on your desktop and select arrange ICONS by and select
allign grid and only have that one checked. See if that works....
