Local Group Policy issue

I have a few gpo settings I would like to change on many machines which
contain the same software image. I originally set the GPO settings and then
prepared the machine image for ghosting and later found out that I need to
revert a couple of the GPO settings. I couldn't find a tool to manipulate
the GPOs via vb script etc to correct the problem.

If I make the changes on the local machine the registry.pol will just over
write the settings on the next GP update. Any suggestions as to correcting
this issue? At this point I'd rather not implement a Domain GPO to correct
the issue since this effects only a group of users.
