local files take forever to open when on the network

Has anyone come across this? Files (excel, word, etc)
take a long time (1 minute +) to open only when connected
to the network. When the XP machine is not connected to
the network, they open instantly. When on the network
there are no issues with Outlook or IE.

Got exactly the same thing, my problem clears only when I
disable the LAN connection. I have not got to the bottom
of it . I have an Abit motherboard if that makes any
difference.
