If you start the Windows XP disk, it loads to an option page
of either starting the "recovery console" or "installing" XP.
Does "installing" XP mean just loading the program from disk
to memory for current session use, or does it mean to
permanently load XP to hard drive...i.e., wipeout and
reinstall XP onto the hard drive?
TIA

Recovery console allows you to run a limited number of programs via a
command line. This is similar to the old DOS prompt. If you boot from the
Windows XP and you get to the blue screen your options are installation or
repair installation.
