loading new programs

Hi,
I have recently purchased a new pc with windows XP professional. Prior to
upgrading or downloading new programs in Windows XP, do I need to exit from
all programs running in the background? (These would be the progrqams that
boot up automatically when the computer boots up.) If so, how do I do this?
And if so, what basic programs do I need to keep running during this
process? Thanks.

With Windows XP, there is no need to disable any programs
although some software manufacturers may suggest disabling
your antivirus program. You can disable your antivirus program
by right-clicking on its icon (in the notification area - next to
the clock), and selecting "disable".
