My PC is currently running Windows XP Pro. I would like to install Linux in a different
partition, same hard disk, and be able to dual boot.
Can anyone give me some quick, simple guidelines or refer me to a good link that describes
in detail how to do it ?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Mike,

Actually, with most Linux distributions this is quite easy and there is
nothing special you need to do. Simply boot with the installation disk and
begin setup. Choose an installation partition, it will create and format the
needed ext and swap volumes (I like to use an extended partition for this).
Setup will also detect the active drive and generally install either LILO or
GRUB to it (replacing the Win bootloader) which will allow for a dual boot
with the existing Windows installation (an entry for which is usually added
automatically).

Most any Linux site will have those instructions, as applicable
to their own version of linux. Knoppix is a great one to get
started with and lets you eperience linux without all the upfront
work as long as you're willing to boot from a CD. Then if you
get along with it, you can finish installing it. Their
instructions are great; I've used Knoppix a fair bit but
abandoned it due to drivers I needed not being available yet.
They might be by now, though; haven't checked lately. I'm not
the kind can write/assemble my own drivers & modules.

Thanks for the instructions ! I do have a few questions though :
- which installation disk are you talking about ?
- LILO ? GRUB ? What are these ? (Sorry about the ignorance)

Use Google. These questions have nothing to do with Windows XP. If you
can't research this yourself, then you will not be successful in
running Linux.

Mike, by all means choose Grub. It is easier to work with. They are
bootloaders. There are many LiveCD's to choose from. Most allow you to
install to the hard drive. A good source is www.distrowatch.com
