Linksys WYR-G54 router

I have a new Linksys WYR-G54 Router.
When I log on to NTL broadband with a direct connection i.e. modem to the
computer, I have no problem logging on.
When I get to the end of the Linksys set up, the last thing the set-up dose
is look for an Internet connection.
This is the problem. Every time plug into the router I loose my Internet
connection.
The fault is not with the router as I have borrowed a Buffalo Airstation
router from a friend and that shows the same fault.
My Linksys router works ok on my friends computer.
My OS is windows 2000 Pro.
Can anyone help please?

Try:

1. Connect the modem directly to the computer and make sure the Internet
connection is working.

2. Open a command prompt and execute:

ipconfig /release ENTER

3. Shut down the computer and disconnect power to the modem.

4. Wait several minutes, reconnect power to the modem, and connect it to
the router.
