links not updating

I have a powerpoint presentation which has links to an excel worksheet. It's taking forever for it to create the links again. We were told to open up the excel worksheet first, open up the PP presentation and then update the links; due to excel opening, updating a link, closing, opening, updating link, closing, etc. However, excel responses that it already has one version of the worksheet open and to close or rename the open worksheet. Is there a setting somewhere to prevent this from happening?

Mmm, what if you go to Edit/Links and set them all to be updated manually?
Then you can update them all at once at a time of your choosing. (I'd
probably leave the Excel file closed when I do this.)
