Link and address bar Malfunctions- degrading fast

Like many, after the latest security update, I had issues with my address bar
not auto-filling the "http://" in a www address entered and a very delayed
opending of the drop box on my browsing history. Based on the prompts here,
we went to the support base doc 918165. Although I experience none of the
other symptoms, I made the registry modifications wtih no impact. I have
uninstalled the update and still had the problem- so reinstalled.

Now I am having an issue with links in documents from other windows
programs. Clicking a link in a Google search page opens up the browse dialog
for my hard drive. Clicking a link to a www address in Word (or other
program) returns an error message that there is no such program or that
access is not available. However, I can copy and past the link in an IE
address bar and it works fine.

XP Pro
IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.15031-1519
Norton/ Adaware- all current and swept today

Any help on this will be very much appreciated.

Hi,
Try these two easy steps first:
IE> Tools> Internet Options> Programs> check the box "IE should check
whether it is the default browser" The next time IE asks, answer yes.

Also (Windows XP) Control Panel> Add or remove programs> Set program access
and defaults> Working with either Microsoft or Custom, enable access to IE
and make it the default browser.

Then see: "If nothing happens when you click a link:"

Hope this helps,

Thanks Don,

Although the browser settings were already there, changing and returning
seemed to fix the link problem.

I still to have to manually add "http://" to any address I put in the bar,
but I will just live with that. None of the fixes here have had an impact
and most of what I am asked to do in the older postings about it seem like
open heart surgery to address a sore finger.

I appreciate the helo.
