Line Spacing

I have several lines centered horizontally. I'm trying to force some of the
text to the next line to reduce the length of a line and keep a phrase
together on the same line (this is a resume). When I put in a line break,
the spacing changes for the next line and I can't figure out why or how to
adjust that. Any help is appreciated.

Are you using a line break (Shift+Enter) or a paragraph break (Enter)?

Well, that's the way it works - it's called "proportional spacing". The
spacing of characters/words on a line is adjusted based on the amount &
nature of the content combined with the formatting used. What you're
describing, though, sounds more like you've used Justified alignment rather
than Center alignment in the paragraph.

It also depends on how you're creating the "line break" ‹ Enter or
Shift+Enter? The former creates a new paragraph, whereas the latter forces
the text to a new line but as a continuation of the same paragraph.

For the phrase you don't want to have split you might try using non-breaking
spaces (Shift+Control+Spacebar) rather than regular spaces.

You might also have better luck using Center-Aligned Tabs rather than
altering the paragraph alignment.

Thanks for all the replies. I realize that my question may not have been
completely clear. When I enter a line break by hitting "Enter" the next
line is too far down the page vertically - instead of single spacing it seems
to be double spaced. I checked the spacing and it changes to exactly 12 pt -
which is not what I had. When I change it back to single spacing it gets
worse, so I'm not sure what's happening.

Enter does not insert a line break but rather a paragraph break; use
Shift+Enter for a line break.
