Limiting Address Bar Auto Complete Display

I ran into an interesting scenario today. A user asked me about a web page.
I told her the web address, but she didn't want to put anything in the
address bar. When I asked her why, she said she had about seven addresses
that she routinely goes to that are already in her auto complete and doesn't
want new addresses to populate in the auto complete area. Instead of putting
addresses in her address bar, then, she puts an address in a search engine
and clicks on the appropriate result to get to the page.

Although I am going to try to set up the Links toolbar for her, or get her
to use the Favorites folder, I'm curious if the auto complete can be
customized (other than turned on and off). I don't think it can but I
thought I'd throw it out there to see if anyone has any other ideas.

Hi,
She's referring to the TypedURLs list. I use it the same way- as a "very
often visited" list. URLs end up in that list only if typed or pasted into
the Address Bar. If you enter URLs via File> Open or Ctrl+o they won't go
into that list.

The list is in the registry at:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TypedURLs

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TypedURLs

Those keys can be exported so that the list can be restored if it's cleared
inadvertently.

This article explains how to edit the list:

These free programs make it easier:
IE Address Bar Editor: http://www.freesoft.fsnet.co.uk/ieedit01.htm
EditURLs: http://www.aandrc.com/editurls/index.htm

Hope this helps,
