Limited or no connectivity after installing Sp2

I have a 2 PC simple crossover network with Internet Connection Sharing. I
have encountered two problems since SP2 install. The recurring "Limited or no
connectivity" error and limited surfing of various web sites from the Client.
The problem comes and goes. I am stuck with this configuration since I live
in a remore area and cable or DSL is only an imaginative wish. I use Intel
gigabit Pro1000 NIC on the client and the equivelant built on Motherboard in
the host. ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe. No switch or router is involved. Help the
Helpless please.

Ken,

The "Limited or no connectivity" error is simply to advise you that your
computer is setup for automatic (DHCP) address assignment, and no DHCP server is
available to assign an address. With a crossover network, this is to be
expected.

The limited surfing of web sites may be related to the SP2 installation, but is
not necessarily related to the "Limited or no connectivity" error. SP2 includes
a pop-up blocker, among other security enhancements, that might hinder web
surfing. Can you describe details of your limited surfing?

Cheers,
Chuck

Thanks Chuck, I understand they are different problems, for example, when the
"limited or no connectivity" shows, always on client, the submask address is
255.255.0.0 instead of the 255.255.255.0. There is no connectivity. I believe
that has been caused by a conflict between Norton Systems Works 2005 worm
detection and SP2. It goes away when I disable that part of Norton Antivirus.
But, the exclusion of a great many of web sites on the client really confuses
me, example and this time, I can go to Citibank.com on the host but cannot
from the client, it just sets there until it times out. I have Xp home on the
client and XP Pro on the host. This network has worked so good until SP 2 was
installed on both PC's. Hope this more clearly describes the problems I am
having. Thanks

Ken

Ken,

Try and define the scope of the two problems more fully. Do you see the
Citibank.com problem all the time? Do you see "limited or no connectivity" and
the Citibank.com problem at the same time? Do you see "limited or no
connectivity" on both computers simultaneously?

When you see the connectivity error, check the ip address on both computers. An
address 169.254.n.n/16 (subnet mask 255.255.0.0) is normal - and you should have
connectivity if both computers are on the same subnet (both computers with
169.254.n.n/16 addresses).

If you're having web connectivity problems, when you can "go to Citibank.com on
the host but cannot from the client", can you ping the host from the client when
this is happening? Can you access other web sites from the client?

Ok, lets forget the "limited or no connectivity" for now since is has not
reocurred since I disabled the Norton worm detection part of the Antivirus
2005. The Citibank website address is identical on both PC's, the client
loads a small protion of the home page and then stops, it does not restart.
The host connects to the citibank site easily. And just now I did the same
with www.microsoft.com. The client would not load the site but the host
loaded it right up. www.yahoo.com works great on either PC.
Thanks

Thanks, lets forget about the "limited or no connectivity" situation since it
has gone away after I disabled the Norton worm detection feature of Antivirus
2005. But the www.citibank.com and also the www.microsoft.com websites load
normally from the host whle neither will load from the client. www.yahoo.com
will load from either PC just fine. Almost looks like a packet problem or
something. It doesn't matter wheither the Firewalls are on or off or if
norton is disabled. FIle and printer sharing is 100% normal.

Thanks, Ken
