Limited or no connectivity

D

David Ellis

Two computers connected via Ethernet crossover cable transfer folders
from one to the other as expected. But the network icon in the target
computer system tray has a yellow triangle surrounding an exlamation
point. Status is: "Limited or no connectivity."

The Gigabit connection is good enough to keep the hard drive in the
shares computer running non-stop during data transfer so the "limited"
is not clear to this network neophyte. However, the target computer is
unable to connect to the root folder on the source drive even though
it is a shared drive with read permission and I'm using the same user
id and password at both ends.

What's the meaning of this status?

The "limited or no connectivity" message means that the computer issuing the
error message believes it should be getting an IP address automatically
(from a DHCP server, or a router or other device that runs DHCP) and is not.
If your network is working correctly you can ignore the warning message, or
turn it off, or properly configure the two computers with fixed IP/DNS
addresses.

As for the problem with one-way failure to browse or connect, be sure that
no firewalls are running on either computer until you resolve the issue.
You can disable the Microsoft XP firewall, any other firewall must be
uninstalled (not just disabled) for proper network testing.
