Limited connectivity

Howard Brazee

I tried to connect to the VPN last night. After a couple of failures, I
deleted the existing icons from the CONNECT and installed via the CD my work
provided.

Now I couldn't access my home LAN. I have limited or no connectivity, but this
computer does know when I unplug it from the router. Occasionally in my
working this, my other computer would get this same problem, but when I turn off
both computers and boot the other first, the other works. Both computers have
XP-PRO with Service pack 2. (So does my wife's laptop which is working).

The following are some of the things I found:

LAN or High-Speed Internet
Limited or no connectivity, Fr...
Realtek RTLB139/810 Family ...

The problem occurred because the network did not assign a network address to
the computer.
Physical Address (censored because this is the internet)
IP Address 169. (censored because this is the internet)
Subnet Mask 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway
DNS Server
WINS Server

Repair doesn't help. That IP address looks way wrong, but I don't know how
to change it. I think it got screwed up while trying to install VPN. I went
through the "install home LAN" routine to see if it would help, because that
doesn't look like a home-LAN IP address.

My other computer sometimes got this, but when I turned off my main computer
and booted the other one, the other one connects.

The other computer has the following.

Physical Address: (censored because this is the internet)
IP Address: 192.(censored because this is the internet)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.(censored because this is the internet)
DHCP Server: 192.(censored because this is the internet)
Lease Obtained: 10/14/2004 8:41:49 PM
Lease Expires: 10/21/2004 8:41:49 PM
DNS Server: 192.(censored because this is the internet)
WINS Server:

How can I get these on my main computer?

A 169.254.......... ip address is assigned by windows when the computer
doesn't receive a real ip address from your router or isp. This is a
standard thing and every windows machine will assin the 169 ip if it doesn't
get a real ip. No need to sensor 169 or 192 ip addresses. These come from
windows and your router. They can't be used against you in any way at all.
What I would try is first delete all connections you have in network
connections. Then go into device manager and make sure that your nic is
installed correctly and working. Then take the router out of the loop and
connect one computer to the internet. If it all works, then try the other.
If that works, then shut down all computers, unplug the router, turn of
modem. Wait a few minutes. Hook the router back up, but leave power off.
Turn modem on and wait for it to sync(if needed). The turn the router on,
then turn the computers on.
Make sure your router is set to be a dhcp server as well. Run the network
wizard if needed. See if you now get a 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3(or
similar) on both machines. I you do then the router is issuing ip's
correctly. Try internet and network. If internet doesn't work then go into
the router config page and make sure it's getting an wan ip from your isp.
Here are a few tweaks that may help as well:

Thanks. I suspect that 2nd link will be important.

I haven't done that yet - except I deleted some VPN connections before trying to
reinstall the VPN. Just deleting them in the connections folder is sufficient?
Then go into device manager and make sure that your nic is
installed correctly and working.

I did this.
Then take the router out of the loop and
connect one computer to the internet.

This computer works if I remove the router. The other computers work with the
router connected and this computer not connected. The other computers often
work with this computer connected to the router as well. My router is only a
week old, replacing an old router, and I haven't gotten my NIC based printer
visible yet - I think I just need to search for it. But then I messed up with
the VPN installation.

I don't remember.

The computer that doesn't work can't get there. The computer that works, works
fine. I have switched wires around, it's not my cabling. Just for some
reason the computer that I tried installing the VPN software now has the wrong
settings.

Looks useful.

Supposed to be, but you know how that goes.

Try looking for a router firmware upgrade as well from the routers website.
Done that.

You can find this in the routers config page. Enter 192.168.0.1 in a browser
window.
Did that.

Yes try both fixes, it sounds like one of these may fix you up.

That was my problem. I deleted these but didn't uninstall the Sygate
security program. I'll wait a few days before trying to install the VPN
again.
