Licensing

Hi,

I have a windows 2003 terminal server connecting to an another windows
license server for licensing, in the same domain. License is activated but I
still seem to get only the 120day grace license period. License server name
has been hardcoded as a registry key.
How do I verify that my license server is actually giving out licenses and
how do I check if permenant licenses are being issued?

Thanks for all your help.

Which OS runs on the TS Licensing Server?
Check the EventLog for errors, especiall "cannot locate licensing
server"
Use the lsreport tool from the Resource Kit.
Check in Licensing Manager if any licenses have been issued.
Did you install Per User or Per Device licenses?
In which licensing mode is your Terminal Server?

Feel free to repost with the above information, and I'm sure we
can help you.

Hi Mike,

Windows 2003 does not have specific modes like in 2000. When I install
terminal services, it seems it is application mode.

Windows 2003 still has different TS modes, but the terminology and
the installation method has changed, compared with Windows 2000.

When you install TS in 2003, it implies Application mode, as you
have detected. This is now called "Terminal Services".

What was called "TS in Remote Administration mode" in W2K is now
called "Remote Desktop for Administration" in 2003. It is already
pre-installed, you just have to enable it in System - Remote. Just
like on XP.

Vera,

I just installed terminal services on my member server.I am supposed to use
the license server which has already been installed and functional as a
terminal server license manager.I did run the lsreport tool, but I could not
find my machine name or user name in that.
When I go to terminal server licensing, it shows the license server and then
says "activation status unknown".
I had modified the registry to give the name of the license server. How do I
verify that licenses are being granted on a permenant basis.

Again: which OS runs on the TS Licensing Server? A Windows 2003 TS
must contact a 2003 Licensing Server, it won't work with a W2K
licensing server.
And is there anything in the EventLog on your TS?

Do I understand correctly that the existing Licensing Server is
not managed by you? Can't the managers of the LS tell you if the
LS is issueing TS CALs to your clients?
