Licensing

I need a very brief run down on what I need to make myself
legal with Windows 2000 Adv Server running Terminal
Services in App mode. All my clients are thin clients
with Windows CE on them so I know I need TS CAL's per
device. I understand I also need Server CAL's per
device. I use Citrix Metafram 1.8 licenses per user,
which was good enough for Win NT4 TSE but not with 2000.
OK, so I need:
Windows 2000 Adv Server licenses
Windows 2000 Server CAL's (one per device)
Windows 2000 Terminal Server CAL's (one per device)
Windows 2000 Licensing Server
Is that correct?

I have 120 CAL's for Citrix and my number of active users
never goes about 90...so would I be safe with 100 CAL's
for Microsoft Server and TS or do I need 220 since that is
the total number of thin-clients I have.

And one more question, does the licensing server have to
be a domain controller...our DC's are owned and managed by
another location and it would just be easier if we could
manage our own LS.

Thanks,
Donna

Actually, if you didn't have NT 4.0 TS CALs, then you have been
running illegally until now. Only difference between NT 4.0 and
W2K regarding license requirements is that W2K *enforces* the
licensing requirements and NT 4.0 did not.

Citrix has a "concurrent" licensing scheme, but Microsoft has not.
That means that you need a TS CAL for every device that will
connect. 220 in your case.

Yes, a W2K LS must be running on a Domain Controller. A Windows
2003 LS can run on any 2003 member server. Since you are upgrading
from NT 4.0 TSE, is there any special reason for not upgrading to
2003? You will get *a lot* more features (you might even conclude
that you don't need Citrix anymore).
