I receive this error message when trying to connect to windows update:

"Validation Failure: Activation Limit Exceeded[0x80080209]

The number of times Windows can be activated with the product key found on
your computer has been exceeded. This may be the result of installing and
operating a single copy of Windows on more than one computer. "

What can I do about this?

If your copy of Windows is legitimate: Call the number and activate over the phone.

Otherwise: Purchase a legitimate copy of Windows and perform an upgrade install.

Call what phone number? I am on the windows update page, and there isn't a
phone number anywhere. My XP is legit, I got it in an unopened box. I can
take pictures of the box and s/n to prove I am the legal owner of it.

Where do I go to find the number?

Toll-free telephone numbers are available in most countries. The telephone
numbers to call are displayed when telephone activation is chosen.

Where do I select "Telephone Activation"

Re-read my post very carefully. "trying to connect to windows update".
Notice, "windows update". My software has already been activated... The
problem is that I receive an error when going to Windows Update.

Newsreaders that can display threads make full-quoting unnecessary. It's
difficult to believe tbird 1.0.6 doesn', but it's up to 1.5 now and
definitely does grok threads. I think you should use them. It's
bone-simple to find what he's asking about.

You're assuming that people have the time or desire to sort through
hundreds of thousands of previously read threads. Everyone I know sets
their newsreaders to view only unread threads. If a previously read
(but not memorized) post isn't quoted, the new post is meaningless.

Anyone????

Sorry I didn't quote the post before. The screen I am reading this on shows
the full thread- I didn't know others couldn't see it.

I do know what I'm talking about. I *have* your newsreader. OE6 does
threads too, and ms's webreader, and google.

Go to (tbird 1.5 again) Tools/Account Settings; your news server
account; Offline & Disk Settings; Select newsgroups for offlne ose.
That way you never ever lose context, even for the people who can't be
bothered to quote reminder-context like I do (which is, of course, the
One True Way To Quote ;-). But msnews purged last January, so it's not
really high risk...

This has gone OT for the thread and newsgroup so I'll stop with this post.

[re serious activation trouble]
Another possibility: are you *sure* you've activated? You don't
absolutely have to on setup (so that you can do it before you've got
even phone service). I don't know if this will work on your box:
Start/Run "oobe/msoobe /a".

Did you also try *starting* setup from your install CD? I don't know
whether you actually have to do the install to get the prompt. That's
something you could ask the hardware vendor about too.

And this is a (fairly) new thing for MS, so I have some sympathy for
them. It's not easy to anticipate everything that can go wrong.

Did you buy your box from a retailer? I notice you said "box" not "box
and receipt". Shrinkwrappers are easy to use, easy to find; it may very
well be that some employee of whoever you bought it from snarfed the
disks and used the activation code, then rewrapped the box. If they're
still using it, they're getting updates with *your* activation code.
And of course if it wasn't a retailer this is even more likely.

If none of this works, I'd call whoever made your computer and go
through phone-menu-hell. You've already hunted online ... haven't you?
Have you searched for "windows activation phone" and "windows
activation telephone"? ... hmmph. I see where Ted Ziegler's quote came
from. MS don't make it easy, do they? My sympathies.

Almost everyone can. Some people have been around so long and have seen
so much they miss details on what's newly available. But as a matter of
convenience for all it's a good thing to quote the really relevant bits
in your followup.

- Computer has been activated for months. I have even been able to go to
Windows Update in the past and download the updates.

- No.. How would this help me download from Windows Update?

- Box came opened from a friend with the CD Key, original install cd,
booklet, and box itself.

- I made the computer. I've looked online for activation issues with Windows
Update and couldn't find anything at all. Windows activation phone wouldn't
be helpful since my XP Pro has already been activated.

Any other suggestions?

Maybe someone else can suggest something, but I'm betting your friend is
using the same key. MS won't like getting interleaved update requests
from different boxes. I think it's time sit your friend down and ask him
flat out whether he's using the CD key himself and/or has passed it on
to others. If he swears not, the best thing I can think of is to hunt
up an 800 number for microsoft. Good luck, I think you're going to need
it. Sorry I can't help more.
