Lexmark Z23 black cartridge not recognized

I've been refilling several lexmark cartridges, with mixed success.
Now I've refilled a black cartridge for the Z23 (think I've refilled it
before) and when I use the utilites to align, etc. and 1st go to install
(the cartridge removal/replacement was sensed) that page displays "no
cartridge". I can click to select a cartridge, but when returning to
that page again, the display is again "no cartridge".

What is Lexmark testing to determine "no cartridge"?

From my knowledge it's only determined by contacts - if cart is removed. So,
see contacts if they are dirty by ink of similar stuff. I've seen it
happened (i've had Z23 and Z33). Ink count is determined solely by
software - by counting droplets used - for this two files are in windows
(named lx***.ini) and therefore when you re-install (clean) windows, it will
show you full carts again, so in this printer you never really know the
status of ink.
If after cleaning contacts cart is still not recognized, there are two
options: either cart is bad or printer went balooney - in both cases it's
cheaper to buy a new printer than new cart...

That's happened to me twice after refilling the black cartridges.
Most refill instructions say to drill a hole in the top of the
cartridge. Well, you can't see how much you're putting in, and soon
it over-filled. The ink dribbles out the nozzles, apparently breaking
contact and sending a signal that the cartride isn't in there.
Cleaning up might help for a while but all the time it has happened to
me the black cartridge soon went south and I had to trash them. Next
time when refilling, chop the topp off the cartridge and fill like you
do the color ones. I just took the top off a #16 black and it looks
just like the color cartridges. I think I'll put a lot less ink in
the black than it needs. With only one compartment a lot of ink would
tend to be "heavy" and tend to dribble again. But even if the
cartridge has failed and you did get some refills out of it, you did
save a bunch of money.

Good Luck.
