Leftover Install artifacts

J

Jim

I was doing an install on my wife's computer (W2000 Pro) and during
the install I was given the option to CANCEL, which I did to stop the
process, which it did.

However, it left two artifacts at startup, which are two INSTALLING
popup screens, one on top of another, saying that it is installing
software. After a few seconds they go away, and the startup continues
normally.

I went to the Microsoft site and downloaded and ran the Microsoft
Install Cleanup program that is supposed to remove any remnants from
the Windows Installer, but alas, it had not effect on these two
popups. I also went to START menu and could find no mention of
Windows Installer anywhere.

Is there some place in the registry that I could go to exorcise these
two minor annoyances?

Thank you for any suggestions,

Jim

You can navigate to;
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer
and delete the "InProgress" subkey to terminate all installations is in
progress.

You can navigate to
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\
and delete the subkey "PendingFileRenameOperations"
and any values under
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\FileRenameOperations

Make sure your temp folders are empty.
%SystemRoot%\temp\
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp\

Hello Dave;

I tried all your suggestions, but alas there were none of the subkeys
you mentioned.

When booting up, all is normal, we get the McAfee splash screen, and
then at very last minute we get 3 or 4 pop up windows, one after the
other, saying"

Windows Installer - in the blue title line

Preparing to install - in the grey box

Also, could not find the Userprofile/local settings/temp folder.

I guess I struck out, huh?

Dave;

Forgot to mention, there was no

C:\Temp

%userprofile%\local settings\temp

folders. Could the fact they are missing be causing the problem?

As an example mine are;
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator.DSPATRICK\Local Settings\Temp
C:\WINDOWS\Temp

Hello Dave;

I went to where you suggested:

C:/WINNT/Temp

and sure enough, there were at least 75 folders there, deleted them
all, most were associated with McAfee Anti Virus.

There were no C:/documents and settings/Adminstrator/Local
Settings/Temp. There was only a ALL USers and Local User,
but none had /Local Settings .

Anyway, the 4 pop up windows are still there. I logged on as
Administrator and they were still there. I wonder just where those
windows are controlled from?

Explorer|Tools|Folder Options|View, then radio button for "Show hidden files
and folders", then uncheck the box for "Hide protected operating system
files"

Hi again Dave;

Sure enough, when I unchecked the box, the Administrator
folder came up, and there were two .dll files in the TEMP
directory. I deleted them, but alas, still have the 4 installer
screens coming up briefly, one after the other, just at the end of the
Windows opening sequence.

What happens if you logon as a new user? (create a new account in 'Users and
Passwords').
