Here is an interesting problem for someone to solve.

There was a requirement to clear out the Windows `prefetch` folder and
now, apart from actually improving loading and boot-up speeds, an odd
thing has beginto happen right after clearing the prefetch folder.

When XP is booted from cold, sometimes not all of the icons in the
system try appear, even though the program(s) has/have sucessfully
loaded and still operate sucessfully. Some of these programs that
suffer this problem are not system services to the allow desktop
interactivity option is not the issue here.

Logging out and logging back in usually gets all the icons to show.
It's not a 100% reproducable event. Like just now, all the programs
that live in the system tray have appeared. This also included the
`Safely remove Hardware` icon and the problem is not limited to any
one particular program/icon.

The only file I didn't clear our from the `prefetch` folder was the
`Layout.ini` file as on examination (a text file) it was not corrupt
in anyway.

So, anyone got any clues to this one?

(Trust me to find the very hard to solve issues.)

Well known XP bug. See
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/top10faqs.htm
(#10, iirc)

for some things that often work for most people.

GSV,

For a "well known bug" it certainly doesn't appear to be documented on
msdn (search all). "XP System Tray" or "XP SysTray".... this problem has
been annoying the heck outta me for a long time. On my laptop, some of the
common "lost" icons are "Volume" and "Power"... a little quicker way I've
found to try to get them back is end task on explorer, and then run
explorer... sometimes it brings them all back- sometimes not... But I too am
looking for a way to "FIX" this once and for all!

Thanks. I've bookmarked your site. I posted the question when while
browsing for something else I came across your FAQs and spotted the
SysTray suggestion. So far knocking off UPnP seems to be working.

The question now is, why is UPnP trigering this bug? Anyone got an
answer?

Actually Kelly, how did you find the solution to this bug?

To search for well known bugs try http://groups.google.com (search for
'windows XP systray missing icons', in this case, and be amazed at how
many hits you get.) MSDN is about the last place I'd look; their search
engine was presumably written by the same folks who did the XP search
function. 8>.
