Prefetch Layout.ini

Hi,

I accidentally deleted the entire contents of the Prefetch folder, this
included the Layout.ini file also. This slowed down the computer quite a bit.

I turned off prefetching, rebooted and then turned prefetching back on and
then rebooted. But it is still slow. The prefetch folder is still empty. Its
been a couple of months now, and still I don't see my Prefetch folder fill up.

So I guess without the Layout.ini file, Prefettching doesn't work, because I
understand it acts as a drive map.

My question was can I manually rebuild the Layout.ini file or do I need to
do a clean install in order to remedy this problem.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Pete.

Make sure this key is set:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session
Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters]
"EnablePrefetcher"=dword:00000003

Dave,

The PrefetchParameters key is set to 3 just as you pointed out.

My problem is prefetching is turned on as specified by the above registry
key. But there is no way of knowing what to prefetch with out the Layout.ini
file. I was wondering if someone knows if it is possible to rebuild it.

No it should get rebuilt over a few days as you use the Prefetch.

It is controlled from registry at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\
Control\Session Manager\Memory Managment\PrefetchParameters
where EnablePrefetcher (REG DWORD) should normally be set to 3
