Can "layout.ini" in the Windows/Prefetch folder be edited?

I would like to remove text from the file, as it wants to load a program
that doesn't exist.

Can I edit "layout.ini"?

Don't try. You can delete everything in the folder, and let it rebuild
over the next days.

But I think you misunderstand how Prefetch works. It does *not* try to
load programs; what it does is keeps a record for each program loaded of
the pattern of files it uses, so that next time *something else* tries
to load that program the files can all be brought in at once. If a
program does not get used in the course of a week or so, the records
about it will be dropped. The files in Prefetch are not exe files - but
..pf ones containing this data.

It is of course possible that some Trojan has tried to hide itself in
the folder - that would appear as a simple .exe file that you do not
want around
