Latest Windows XP Home Updates

I had an icon at the bottom of my screen a few days ago saying there were
critical Windows updates to install. I had other applications running at
the time, so I just ignored it for the time being. I looked at my screen a
day and a half later and the icon was gone. I finally got around to
installing the updates today, but when I used the Windows help and support
center updates it said that my Windows XP Home OS was up todate already. I
checked the Windows restore calendar and it showed a check point displaying
5 Windows programs being created at 3AM last Thursday.

My question, is it possible for Windows updates to automatically install
themselves without user input? I had Norton AV and WinMX running all the
while my PC was unattended. I have a hardware firewall and the Windows XP
software firewall installed. I am concerned that maybe the updates didn't
install properly because there were other programs running.

I did a shut down before I went to check for the updates, so if they were
indeed installed they would have taken effect by now.

Is there any cause for alarm?

Probably no cause for alarm.
You may have selected the install option without realizing.
Have you checked your settings:
Right click My Computer
Click Properties
Click Automatic Updates

XP is a little more robust than the older OS's and depending on your connection,CPU, motherboard\chipset, and so on can handle multiple downloads and installs without conflicts or problems. Although I hate any automatic updates and do everything manually your system obviously has the automatic update feature enabled. For simple questions like this you would be amazed at how much information your very own computer contains. Go>start\help and support and type in Automatic Update in the line at the top left and then hit enter on your keyboard or click the arrow to the right of the line. You will see tons of information for you to read. Including the articles contained in XP to assist you, if you are connected to the internet at the time you type your search in you will get additional articles about what you are looking for. In this case you should recieve 32 different articles about Automatic Update. Have fun. }:~)
