Latest news on Windows Defender?

I stopped using WD about three months ago when the latest build started
generating 5-6 'Checkpoints' every day. Just wondering, has Microsoft made
any announcements as to when WD will (finally) be released out of beta? Or
will we see a beta 3? I seem to remember the current beta expires at the
end of July.

MSAS beta 1 expires in July. Windows Defender does not expire, and AFAIK,
there is no news on a new build, but maybe one of the MS MVPs will know more.
About the system restore check points: It seems that if you set Defender to
notify you of changes made by allowed software and then join as an advanced
member of Spynet, it reduces the number of checkpoints that Defender creates.
I don't know this for sure. I did have Windows Live One Care installed, and
Defender was creating a multitude of new checkpoints. I uninstalled One Care
and reinstalled McAfee. Defender has settled down, and the number of
checkpoints have decreased. I seldom use system restore anyway because it
ususally does not solve my problems and seems cause extra problems for my
security software. Consequently, from time to time, I delete all except the
most recent checkpoint, after I have done all security scans and my system is
stable and clean. For emergency purposes, I make manual backups of my
registry using the program ERUNT.

Confirming Old Rebel's remarks... Simply setting Defender to notify me
about changes made by allowed software in addition to my previous choice to
notify about not yet classified software, has reduced the number of these
Defender checkpoints to a maximum of one per day. That's down from as many
as five per day, although I do get an occasional balloon message on
startup. I only have three days of experience running this way though.
Seems like a far better choice than turning off RTP, if these results hold.

I found that did not work and i have the residential shield turned off till
microsoft has a fix for this.
from what is posted in general- they are aware of this problem and say they
will eventually get to fixing it.

Right, we can only report our own personal experience, and my experience is
that there was a pretty dramatic reduction in Defender checkpoints since
Sunday when I made the change. For instance today, I've been online all
day and there are no checkpoints of any kind so far. So all I can tell
people with this problem is to try it on your own system and see what you
experience, maybe you'll be lucky, because obviously it doesn't work for
everyone... :)

I just used the registry edit fix posted here some time ago (forget by whom,
apologies)
You can fix Windows Defender beta 2 system restore point creation bug with
simple registry edit:

In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Scan

set DWord value DisableRestorePoint to 1.

If DisableRestorePoint value is not present, create it as a DWord

Note: if it does not allow the change, right click Windows Defender key,
click permissions, give yourself (Administrators) full permission first,
then after the change undo that again.

I now just have the regular system checkpoints an no WD restore points.

This is the supported method of elminating the excess restore points. I
haven't found it documented formally yet, though.

Hi and Hello Bill, my Friend!
Seems that ticking the abovementioned box ("Changes made to Your computer by
software that is allowed to run" ) dismissed the habit of creating either so
called "checkpoints" or any kind of System Restore Points. Mine hasn't done
ANY in 2 days! In the meantime I ran two regular deep scans and one quick
scan (scheduled). So it works the way it should always meant to work. I don't
dig deep though: don't know if this is a "heurestic", coincidental solution
or the new engine's designed to forget this abundant creation of SR-points.
Anyway, thank U all for the good advice - I've already left Ewido behind,
and start using WDef again.

I'm glad this works, but I don't know why.

ticking that box but unticking the one above it works for me. Now WD is no
longer making checkpoints and so far in 3 days on 2 computers (I am logging
results for a week) I am only getting system restore points.
Maybe MS should just fix this so we all do not have to find ways to do this.
Seems only we beta testers who come here know the tricks
What is going to happen to regular users who will now use the product once
it comes out of beta? they are not going to know the tricks- so it should
be fixed before it does come out of beta.

just my 2cents ;)

And we have a post from Joe Faulhaber of Microsoft stating that they are
working on fixing this issue--but the code he speaks of has not yet been
released. Stay tuned!
