I recently replaced my OEM 80 gig HDD with a Seagate 250 gig. It worls fine,
but my OS (Windows XP SP2) will only recognize about half of the capacity.
Any suggestions?

fixacr:
As you have heard from some of the responses you've received, there may be a
problem with your motherboard's BIOS not supporting large-capacity disks,
i.e., drives > 137 GB.

There are two basic requirements for the XP OS to recognize the full
capacity of those large drives...
1. The motherboard must support large-capacity disks, and,
2. The XP OS contained SP1 and/or SP2 at the time the HDD was installed.

So...
Do you know whether your motherboard supports large-capacity disks?
Virtually all motherboards manufactured over the past four years have this
capability. And if it's an older motherboard not having this capability,
frequently there's a BIOS update to provide it.

Assuming your motherboard *does* support large-capacity disks, was SP2
*already installed* to the XP OS when you installed your 250 GB HDD? Is it
possible SP2 was *not* installed at the time you installed the 250 GB HDD?

And provide some details about what the system indicates as to the total
disk capacity of that 250 GB HDD. Specifically, what do you mean when you
state that the OS "will only recognize about half of the capacity." Be
precise. What does Disk Management indicate?
