Laptop Will Not Bootup

Hi:

I have a cousin who has a Compaq Presario 2500 laptop that will not
bootup. It begins to start up
and then stops at the blue Windows start up screen. He tried to use Safe
Mode using the last settings
that worked and it said this: One of the files containing System's
Registry data had to be recovered
by use of log or alternate copy. It said the recovery was successful, but
the laptop still will not
bootup and stops at the blue windows start up screen. The boot up problem
just started this week.

We also tried the F8 bit and all that does is allow the choice of Safe
Mode, which still leads to the blue
WinXP logo screen and there it freezes.

Inserted a CD containing the downloaded file of Wndows SP2 Update, but
cannot access the file on
it to try and reinstall SP2. In addition, laptop does not contain a floppy
drive. Windows XP Home Edition
is OEM installed and we do not have a Windows XP Home Edition CD, but only
a Recovery CD.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to possibly resolve this issue they
would greatly be appreciated.

It's not clear if trying to reinstall SP2 made any changes or not. If you
think that attempt did not make any changes to the system:

On the advanced start menu (the screen that appears after pressing F8), is
a "Last Known Good" option. It uses the configuration that last booted the
system successfully. Has your cousin tried that option yet?

Another thought: If it hasn't been tried already, boot while connected to a
power outlet instead of booting using battery power.
