Laptop starts up and when I click on a user icon it just shuts down

My HP Pavilion N5195 Laptop has a big problem.
When I start up the computer, it goes to the list of USER ICONS. When I
pick my icon it just logs back off. I cannot get past this window. I
can't even get into the files at all. I can't even get into this OS
with Safe Mode.

I had this problem 3 months ago. My quick fix was to buy another
version of Windows XP and install it seperately. I thought that by
doing this, I could somehow access my old files in my previously
installed Windows XP. The new Windows XP is totally functional, but I
still can't access my files from the original Windows XP.

Does anyone know how to access my other files? I was too stupid to back
up my files before I had the problem.

This sort of issue is usually related to spyware. Do you get any sort of
error message?. Sometimes reinstalling an original XP with no service packs
over an updated version with SP1 or 2 can also give this problem.
Sometimes just trying to log in repeatedly (20 - 50 times!!) will eventually
get you in.

The way I would normally tackle it would to to boot from a bootable CD such
as Bart PE CD and do a manual cleanup of obvious spyware. Alternatively you
could remove the hard drive and mount it into another PC (with a laptop
adapter) and run a spyware clean against it (and antivirus).
If you think the service pack issue problem is likely Microsoft has
published instructions on how to remove the service packs working from the
repair console.

You should find that your old files are also visible if you boot from Barts
PE CD. If you are mounting from another PC the chances are that they will
remain hidden. I havent tried this but a Linux bootable CD would probably
acheive the same result.

In order to access your old files you need to take ownership of
the files. Take a look here for the procedure:

Good luck
