Laptop shuts off and CPU Usage at 100%

I have a Gateway 7422gx laptop. Recently, it started acting weird. The fan
would run faster than normal for 3-4 seconds and then the whole machine would
turn off. In addition, I noticed the CPU usage is at 100% even without any
apps running. Any ideas?

Checked for viruses/spyware/adware ??

If you hit CTRL-SHIFT-ESC and bring up the Task Manager, you can go to the
processes tab and see what is consuming your CPU.

Check the exhaust vents - make sure they aren't clogged up. Any
contaminates you should try to brush away ( Car Air Vent brush ).
Sounds like the unit is overheating and the BIOS thermal shutdown
threshold was reached. I would download and use SpeedFan to
keep a close eye on the Thermal conditions and fan speeds. Since
a notebook has only the single fan, if it fails the unit will overheat
fairly quickly. Most notebook users are aware of heat - just have
no readily available way to monitor it. SpeedFan found here:
http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php
**Don't be surprised when you find out what the CPU and Drive
temps are inside the notebook case. ~135-145 Degrees F.

I installed SpeedFan. HD is ay 106F and Core is 104F.

What are normal readings? It is not in "fail" mode now with these temps.

Those temps are fine. Most notebook hard drives are rated at up
135 Degrees-F and CPU limits vary. Most will enter a throttling
mode to try and self-regulate. If that fails then the BIOS control
may take over and shutdown the computer. It's quite normal for
both CPU/Drive and case sensor to abruptly rise whenever the
PC is performing intensive operations . When the workload goes
down (normal/quiescent) then temps will fail back pretty quickly.
Several things make notebooks hotter - sitting on a wood desk is
one thing that cause heat to build-up. A good/inexpensive solution
is a "Notebook Chiller" pad that gets power from a USB port. You
can pick them up at most Office Supply stores and Best Buy for
~$30 or under.

Thanks. I did notice a spike to 133F on the "core" reading. The fan was not
detected. Thanks again for your help.

Jeff, Hopefully you found a fix to your problem and that you are still using
this fine machine. The problem that you have is a well known problem with
both the GW 7422GX and the EMachines m6811. Both GW and Emachines (before
the buy out) put out these machine and are based on the Arima Shadow MB. It
seems that E-machines had a bigger problem with this that GW and it could be
that GW had a tougher QC process than Emachines.

It is believed that the problem is in the thermal detection fan switch
somewhere but it has never been pinned down. There hare several temporary
fixes out there. I have both machines and still use them today for various
things. If you go to www.notebookforums.com you will find a bevy of
information on fixes that people have tried.

There are two big things that you can do to reduce the frequency of the cut
offs but I can't guarantee that it will totally eliminate your problem.

(1) You need to open your machine, remove and clean the CPU fan. Once dust
collects on the fan blades, it drops your cooling efficiency sharply. You
will have to use some type of cleaning solvent because you have two fans in
your assembly. Please use some Q-Tips to clean as much of the dust out of the
inside as you can.
(2) Clean the processor and apply new thermal compound. Artic Silver 5
worked very good for me.
(3)When you replace torque them down but be very careful! If you torque
them too much, the screws will break and you will have to replace the
mounting bracket and get new screws which is not very easy to find.

There is still a flaw in the circuitry but this should drastically reduce
the overheating issue.

On one of my machines, of re-engineered the heat sink to add a thin layer of
copper plating and some additional venting slots to get faster heat
dissipation and dispersal from the chamber. I haven't had a problem for a
couple of years now and these machine (although not in primary rotation) are
still heavily used with confidence.

Good luck if you are still having problems.
