Laptop screen doesn’t appear at times...

I have a HP ZD7000 laptop and there are times when booting up that I
do not have a display. This happens intermittently and can either be
from a fresh boot or coming out of standby. Once the machine boots up
and I do have a display it works fine. When the display doesn’t work
all I can do is shutdown manually and restart. I am afraid this will
damage the OS if I keep it up.

I am running Windows XP/2 Media Center.

At first I thought maybe a microswitch in the screen was bad but there
have been times when I sent the machine into standby and not touched
the angle of the screen and it failed upon wake-up.

Also I have noticed that whenever this happens my background color
(the screen color behind the wallpaper) changes from Windows blue to a
blue green color.

Another thing if this matters. When using MS FrontPage 2003 and using
Alt+Tab to switch between programs (say Notepad for example),
sometimes I get a BSOD and immediate restart. I have only noticed this
going from the other program to FrontPage but not vice-versa.

A repair shop told me that I should reinstall Windows but I’m not sure
this is what to do. I tried reinstalling the drivers this morning from
the HP supplied CD and the display failed the next time I rebooted

Has anyone else out there encountered this problem and if so what was
the fix?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

I have ran both Norton AV and AVG AV in safe mode with no virii found.
Also ran AdAware and Spybot S&D and no unusual spyware found.
