LAPTOP PROBLEMS!!! PLEASE HELP!!!!

I was copying photos from my digital camera to my laptop via USB cord and
while I was doing this my laptop battery went dead. I went upstairs and got
my power cord, plugged it in and turned it back on. It went to the black
screens stating that windows was shut down improperly and gave me the option
of Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, Last
settings that Worked, and Start normally. I did start normally and it went to
the Windows XP Home Edition screen. About 17 seconds (i now have it timed)
later, the windows screen kicks to a blue screen (too fast to read) and then
the laptop kicks off. The laptop turns back on and goes immediately back to
the black screen with the options. I have no idea what to do!!! I was told i
could reinstall certain parts of windows XP without having to completely
reformat and lose everything. There are some files that I definitely need
from it first. However, with my laptop (Toshiba Satellite M35-S456) I only
recieved a toshiba backup disk and it only gives me the option of completely
reformatting. I did not receive the backup XP disk. I don't mind reformatting
once I get some stuff off of it that I need. I was told by a few people that
even without windows running, i could salvage some of my files. Can anyone
please help me out!?!?!?

Try unnplugging the camera and booting inot safe mode. now you should be
able to rebot inot normal mode. if not go back inot safe mode then goto
start/ program file/accessoried/system tools/system restore. Try selecting a
restore point that is recent but before the crash.
