laptop mouse wheel won't work

I have a dell Inspiron 5000. I just updated (new install) from win 98 to win
xp home.

Before: if mouse was plugged in, mousepad on laptop did not work -- but ps/2
mouse & wheel worked great -- either or situtation.

Now: mousepad is ALWAYS on (kind of a pain -- can I turn it off?) and mouse
wheel does not work -- mouse buttons do.

I have searched for more updated drivers -- the computer says there are
none.

Any thoughts?

If it requires Dell specific drivers, you are going to have to get them
from Dell.
