Laptop died - how to get Documents and Settings files off HDD ?

My old laptop died a few days ago, and I have already purchased a new
machine. I have no problems connecting the old laptop drive to my
desktop machine and copying files from Program Files, etc to an
external USB drive to migrate to the new machine, but I cannot even SEE
my "robert" folder under Documents and Settings on the old laptop
drive. Obviously this is a problem, since I don't have access to My
Documents and my Outlook PST files, etc.

Do I have any options here? Is there any software available that will
give me access to the files?

Why don't you try the Search command in Start menu? Click Start - Search -
click All Files and folders - type your file name - choose a desire location
of your laptop HDD in "Look In" box and click Search.

Once even a single file is found you can see the location in right side pane
where search results displayed.

Hope this is what you are looking for, let us know!

That didn't work. I'm still getting the "Access is denied" error
dialog. Trying to search into that folder still does the same thing.
Is the machine ID tied into this somehow? What if I changed the name
of the desktop machine to what the laptop was - could that work?

Ricky,

Thank you VERY much for this information. I have taken control of my
own (grin) folder and set the permissions. I am currently copying the
files now, and everything looks great so far.

Thanks again!

I think you should create a new user of the same name as your laptop
(Robert). Hope this help, give it a try. Let us know!
