Laptop-desktop network XP

Darren

I have a laptop running XP Home and a desktop running XP pro.

Whenever I connect them together, they both recognise the network cable is
connected (I'm using a crossover cable) but getting them to talk to each
other is extremely difficult. I succeed about 1 in 10 attempts.

I have managed to connect my laptop a little more successfully to the system
at work in the past, but even that is now difficult.

Is there a clear instruction somewhere on the net that says exactly what
settings should be made? The Network Connection Wizard rarely helps.

Thanks,

Darren

What are the 9 failures.

What is the difficulty. Can you ping the machines.

Do not use wizard. Use your own static IP addresses for 2 computers
like 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 with mask of 255.255.255.0.

see www.wown.com for more or post here.
Thanks,

Darren

Thanks Madhur

Basically, the 9 failures are just when one computer says the network
resource is not available or I don't have permission to access it.

I don't know how to ping. I'm new to networking. Is there a beginners guide
somewhere?

Thanks for your help. WOWN looks promising.

Darren

Does it occur randomly or with some specific folder. To ping the machine
just type the ping <ip address> at the command prompt.

I'm getting the same error between my laptop and desktop connected behing a
Linksys Cable router. I even turned off my software firewall to see if that
was an issue, and it wasn't. My user name and pword are the same on both.

Both machines are DHCP and the router serves as the DHCP server. Both machines
are able to connect to the Big Wide World, but don't want to connect to each
other. I'm sure it's just some stupid setting I have overlooked.

Any hints would be appreciated.

Only I get the error 10 out of 10 times.
