Network cable unplugged error?

Hi

I have two pcs: one is a laptop, the other a desktop. Both are running
Windows XP Home. I'm using a cat5e Crossover patch cable to connect
the two. I use the Network setup wizard on the desktop and about
midway through it tells me that the Cable isn't connected or the card
isn't installed. I've checked the cable and even tried another 2 Cat5
cables with no luck. The Network card is part of the Motherboard and
is reported by Device Manager as running properly.

In "Network Connections" this connection has a red cross through it
with the words "Network cable unplugged". The Laptop doesn't show any
connection after running the Network setup wizard. Also the on board
Network card in the Laptop isn't mentioned anywhere in Device Manager
that I can find.

I've deleted and reinstalled the Network card on the Desktop and
installed the latest drivers for the Laptop. I have probably
overlooked something simple ? What can cause an "Network cable
unplugged Error" other than the cable itself?(As I've tried 3 cables
with no luck.)

That one's almost always right. Are you sure the cable is a crossover? You
can tell by looking at the positions of the wires in the ends. If the orange
and green pairs have their locations reversed on opposite ends of the cable
it is a crossover.
