I have two computers (a laptop and a desktop). I can connect my ethernet
cable to my modem and use the interent with my laptop but not my desktop.
When I plug the ehternet cable into the desktop, it says that a network cable
is unplugged. The same cable works fine on the laptop. Help.

Plugging and unplugging network cables continuously can lead to worn cable
ends and ports on the NIC and other devices. If you are constantly
switching, I suggest going to a wireless network.

Is there a Link / Activity light burning on the NIC? Is there a light on for
the port that the patch cord is connected to?

Right-click My Computer > select "Properties" > select the "Hardware" tab >
click the "Device Manager" button. Does the network adapter have a yellow
question mark or a red X? If so the device is not working properly and you
should uninstall it and reinstall it.

I'd take the desktop to a local, reputable and independent (i.e., not

Yes windows version. The desktop was working yesterday. We had a bad
storm
and the power went out and it hasn't worked since.

sounds like a bad card
open a command window
then type ipconfig

if you see something
like media not connected
message, then the card
is bad eventhough the o.s
may say it's enabled

Get a router, connect the router to the modem, connect both computers to
the router and leave everything connected all the time, except when you
take the laptop on the road.

Without a router your modem is picking up a different MAC address.
You will have to turn off/reset your modem every time you change
boxen.
