I have two computers (a laptop and a desktop). I can connect my ethernet
cable to my modem and use the interent with my laptop but not my desktop.
When I plug the ehternet cable into the desktop, it says that a network cable
is unplugged. The same cable works fine on the laptop. Help.

Try and see if your NIC is working in Device Manager under Network Adapters.

In other words - start/Setting/ControlPanel/Network and Dial Up Connections.
Local Area Connections should be enabled. do that.
