I am kind of new to the community so i hope i am asking this question

You were referred to a Media Player group when you posted this same
question this morning.

- How did your "computer crash"?

- What do *you* mean by crash?

- Did you have to install the OS and all applications anew?

- What does your CD/DVD drive do in Windows XP?

- What version of Windows XP?

- What service pack for Windows XP?

- Have you installed all the available drivers and software that originally
came with your Dell from the provided restoration CDs/partition?

- What about downloading the latest from the Dell Support site given the
service tag (or just the model) of your Dell?

What caused the crash?

Try reseating the drive cable.

If that doesn't help, do you have another computer you can try the drive in?

Can you try a drive from another computer in this one?
