Both CDRW and DVD don't work after SP2

Even after completely deleting and unplugging and re-
booting and Install New Hardware Wizarding, my CDRW and
DVD-ROM will not recognize or play any discs. With tech
support we changed a problematic registry entry they
claimed caused issues - no good (involved switching
Control to LocalSystem.) They said put in new drivers -
but there are not any available from mfrs. DVD is LG
DRD8160B, CDRW is Sony CRX175A1. Both drivers are
Microsoft 5.1.2535.0 dated 7-1-01, same as before the SP2
update. Device Manager says devices are working
properly - Troubleshooting offers no help.

Drive shortcut icons on desktop show blanks instead of
the icons of the programs on the disks therein. The
drives spin and tell me to install the disk I am trying
to read. Any options beside removing SP2, which I'm sure
would cause even more problems?
