Just had a call from my brother who has following set up:

PC with ADSL Internet connection and wireless network point (not a router),
Centrino spec laptop, both machines running XP.

He can connect from laptop to PC no problem, sees all files etc, but the
laptop cannot use the Internet connection.

When he connects with crossover cable, however, the laptop can use the
Internet connection.

I don'y have details of his specific hardware to hand but I'm wondering if
anyone can suggest what the basic problem is.

I'm new to wireless connectivity and I'm wondering if he needs a wireless
router on his PC rather than a wireless network point?

TIA

The router is the easiest way to share a broadband
connection. if he already has a wireless AP, all he needs
to do is buy a Router (suggest one with a built in four
port switch) then the DSL will plug into the router and
the AP will plug in using a normal Cat5e cable. Otherwise
the other way is to use the internet sharing feature in
XP, just follow the link I provided for info on this
feature.
