I have a very simple home Lan-network with just 2 wndows
xp running pc's connected to a 3Com Hub. I've got
internet connection on one pc and thsi way i can use it
on both. Until now I let my second pc (the one without
connection) work with DHCP identification. However now I
need to identify it with an IP that won't change each
time I reconnect. Writing a simple IP manually (like
192.168.xxx.xxx)just doesn't work. What should I do?

Hi,

You must have all computers in the same subnet. Take whatever your
DHCP-assigned address was before you made any changes and change only
the last number - a different one for each PC, and don't use 1. Now,
when you type this into the network settings, fill out the gateway to be
(first three numbers of ip).1

For example, if the IP you gave the computer is was 192.168.0.2, you
would need to put 192.168.0.1 in the gateway box. This ensures that your
computer uses the ICS computer as its connection to outside networks -
including the internet.

Lastly, setup some DNS servers (usually settings are available from your
ISP) and set subnet mask = 255.255.255.0.
