I have tried Google to find the web site for LaCie user group but no
success. Does anyone know what the web address is?

Are you having a problem using LaCie? I've had one of there removable drives
for a long time and use it for my backup. Perhaps I could answer your
question.

Many thanks for your offer
I have a number of questions.
I am thinking of the 301304 EK Drive which has 1TB, 16MB Buffer and 7200
RPM which looks like a reasonable spec
It also states "Fanless operation" when most other models have a fan. Is
this successful?
I also will probably split the drive into 3 partitions so when setting up a
backup presumably you are given a choice of partitions?
A friend who has one but is fairly clueless of its operation told me that he
simply connected it from the box and it works! He says that it continuously
backs up your data. Is this true?
Also does it only backup any changes which occur?
I suspect there is a feature which allows you to set up various parameters
which will control the backup
As you can see I wish to find out more about it before I buy it
Thanks again

NEVER backup to a partition on the same drive ; always use an
external/another drive .

I agree completely.

always use an external/

I agree completely with that too--use an external drive that is not
connected except when backing up or restoring.

another drive .

But if what you mean there is another internal drive, I disagree. I
don't recommend backup to a second non-removable hard drive because it
leaves you susceptible to simultaneous loss of the original and backup
to many of the most common dangers: severe power glitches, nearby
lightning strikes, virus attacks, even theft of the computer.

I can't answer most of your questions but you can specify exactly what and
when you want a backup and what should be included in it. There is no fan on
mine but it is small compared to what you are looking at (only 160gb).
Software comes with it for setups, etc. I use it mostly as another drive and
do all the backups when a want in Explorer.

richardsullivan has brought this to us :
I too am surprised, as I own 3 lacies and have struggled with problems.

My computer will no longer recognize my newest Neil Poulton Design 1 TB black
lacie that is just 3 months old.

I get a strange message when I turn it on:

"Disc Insertion
The disc you inserted was not readable by this computer.
Initialize Ignore Eject"

This lacie always sits in the same place, the icon is put away from the
desktop properly, has not been bumped or dropped, etc. The computer
recognizes the other two older lacies, one Firewire and the other a USB. This
troublesome lacie is a USB as well. I changed cords, ports, restarted the
computer in different configurations; tried all kinds of things.

Dies anyone have an idea? All my video is stored here, so losing these files
would be a real mess.

Did you google the EXACT eror?

Disc Insertion The disc you inserted was not readable by this computer.
