User name & password preventing progress

B

bm

I have a new external HD from Lacie which comes with it's own backup
software. Every time I try to backup I am asked for my user name & password.
I have never used a password in Windows but since their system demands it I
added a password for Windows XP.
The message I get is "Failed to set Scheduled User name or password. Please
retype them"
I am wondering if there is some procedure I have missed in creating my user
name & password in XP
Is there some way of checking the correctness of them?

Best to check your LaCie manual and read the LaCie FAQs:
http://www.lacie.com/support/faq/faq.htm?faqid=10574.

The FAQ gives instructions I don't understand, Could you please help me.
It says go the web Admin page and click server to see configuration
What is web admin page? and what is server?
Sorry to be so stupid

Strictly a shot-in-the-dark, but it appears that the program is trying
to schedule a process to do your backup. According to the article:
"How To Schedule a Server Process in Windows XP Professional"
<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/305613>
The username must be entered in the form "domain\user". Try using this
for to enter your user name. If you're not part of a domain, then try
substituting your computername for the <domain> part.

Thanks for your help. When I read the article I found it applied to
schedules within Windows. Unfortunately my schedule is being applied within
LaCie which I have filled in correctly. It is only when I try to start the
backup that I get the message
I get two options finally
"Run only when the user is logged on". If I tick this one I get the
rejection message
second one is " Run whether the user is logged on or off" If I tick this
one I get two boxes to fill in Windows logon name and password
For some reason it does not recognise the information I give.
I have tried putting the domain name in front of my user name but no joy
It seems like a very small problem of recognition

Are you sure? Did you check what tasks are present in the Task Scheduler?
Does one of them apply to LaCie? If yes, what is the Command Line, what are
its various properties?

I should explain that the software I am using is produced by LaCie and the
term schedule is part of their process which is as follows
1 Job Information
2 Where to BU
3 What to BU
4 Settings- Select type of BU
Also there is a selection of No Security or AES
Encryption in which case you give a password
I have selected both options but the result is the same.
5 Schedule- give the frequency of BU
6 Start and I the get" Failure to set schedule users name or password"

I should also explain that I get no rejection when doing a full BU, only
when I do a partial or update BU
Hope that explains it clearly

It does but since I am not familiar with the LaCie product I am not in a
position to assist any further. This question really belongs into a LaCie
forum since it does not appear to be related to Windows. There is a remote
possibility that the Windows Task Scheduler is involved but since you did
not respond to the Task Scheduler-related aspect of my previous response I
am unable to draw any conclusions.

I am sorry I did not understand what Windows Task Scheduler was .I have now
found out and there are 5 LaCie jobs listed
Example of one; GBM Own data backup--Full at 8am on the first Tuesday of
month starting 17/10/09
So this looks as if I had carried out a full BU and later added the
schedule for future BU without me realising it
When I requested the properties I got a message that the task scheduler is
not running
But when I deleted that the properties window appeared with the correct
information
So it may yet not be scheduled properly.
I was confused by the fact that LaCie use the word schedule and also Windows
uses the word but it looks as if LaCie are using the windows scheduler to
operate the back up.
The fog is clearing slightly! You may be able to see through it

OK, there is useful information in your reply. We now need to drill a bit
further down.
- Click Start / Run
- Type the three letters cmd
- Click OK
- Type this command:
net start
- Press the Enter key
- Report if the Task Scheduler service appears in the list.
- Open the Task Scheduler via the Control Panel.
- Click the Advanced pull-down menu.
- Click "View Log"
- Check the result for the jobs that you think failed. Note that this is a
circular log file. The most recent events could be somewhere in the middle
of the file!

The Task Scheduler does not appear on the list.
The log showed 35 failed jobs all similar but at a different time of day but
all on the 24/07/08 !
No mention of any failed jobs in 10/09
One example is;
User_Feed_Synchronization-{AD194F03-5854-4F80-8E01-91FDDE91D2B8}.job"
(msfeedssync.exe) 24/07/2008 16:30:00 ** ERROR **
The attempt to retrieve account information for the specified task failed;
therefore, the task did not run. Either an error occurred, or no account
information existed for the task.
The specific error is:
0x8004130f: No account information could be found in the Task Scheduler
security database for the task indicated.

The Task Scheduler must be running at all times. If it does not then your
scheduled tasks won't execute. You can start it like so:
- Click Start / Run
- Type the three letters cmd
- Click OK
- Type this command:
net start "Task Scheduler"
- Press the Enter key.
You must run the command while logged on as Administrator.

I did this but got "The syntax of this command is ( a list of 22 headings)"
But no Task Scheduler

If the Command Processor rejected your command then you mistyped it. You
might have omitted a space or you might have used two single quotes (')
instead of one double quote (") on each side of "Task Scheduler". The
command syntax is correct, guaranteed. You need to be a little more
persistent. If you still fail then you might have some malware on your PC.
If so then this more specific syntax may deliver the desired result:

%SystemRoot%\System32\net.exe start "Task Scheduler"

I have tried both a number of times with no success. Could you check if
these are right net(space)start(space)"Task(space)Scheduler" and

%SystemRoot%System32\net.exe(space)start(space)"Task(space)Scheduler"

net(space)start(space)"Task(space)Scheduler"
is correct but
%SystemRoot%System32\net.exe(space)start(space)"Task(space)Scheduler"
isn't because you dropped a backslash. However, rather than running around
in circles on this entirely trivial issue, let's force it by you doing this:

1. Download the following file:
http://www.hotlinkfiles.com/files/2415947_tztwt/bm.bat
2. Double-click the file to execute it.
3. Copy and paste the Notepad screen that you will see into your response.

System error 2 has occurred.

The response is;
The system cannot find the file specified.

The plot thickens . . . I suggest you now do this:
- Right-click bm.bat, then click Edit.
- Copy the code below, then paste it into bm.bat. Do NOT
retype it - this would most likely result in typing errors and
further confusion.
- Save and close the file.
- Double-click it to execute it.
- Copy and paste the result into your reply.
