USB Drive not being "seen"

XP Pro Version 2002 SP3:
I have a LaCie external hard drive which would always autoplay when started,
until recently.
Now here is what is different.
The LaCie would always come up as drive F.
But recently in order to force my Thumbnail drive (Sandisk Cruzer) to come up as
drive J, I assigned F, G, H, & I to various locations on the small network I
have at home. (This was done because I needed to take some work home & the
application loads a variety of files according to drive letter, folder etc., and
if the thumbnail was assigned F the application could not find them.)
Now when I turn on the LaCie it spins and all but there is no autoplay and no
visibility in Explorer.
What am I doing wrong? What should I do instead? Since the Cruzer is U3 isn't
there a better way to sync things?
Thanx,

Use Disk Manager to assign it the J: drive...
Plug in USB Drive, then
Right-click "My Computer" -> Manage -> Storage -> Disk Management ->
Right-click on the USB Volume -> Change Drive Letter...
