Konica Minolta 2300DL false 'media jam' errors.

I have a Konica Minolta 2300DL colour laser printer which is just over
two years old, but has only done 4500 pages.

It is now reporting 'Media Jam - Tray 1' when asked to print a single
page document. It picks up the paper draws it a couple of inches into
the machine and stops before reporting the error.

Multi-page documents have a slightly different problem in that the
first sheet of paper goes into the printer correctly and begins to
emerge from the top. But as the second sheet is picked up it goes a
couple of inches into the printer and then reports 'Media Jam - Fuser'
the emerging page is then left hanging out of the exit slot.

There are no actual jams, because in the case of the Tray 1 error
simply opening and closing the rear of the printer fixes the problem as
the paper is then collected correctly and the print is successful. The
fuser error requires the manual removal of the paper before the next
page will print.

I've tried numerous suggestions outline in previous posts found in
Google from pushing the bottom of the paper tray down several times
through to making sure there is more than 100 sheets in the tray.

As far as I can see there are no bits of paper in the mechanism and not
even a significant build up of paper dust (this has only done 4500
pages after all), and there is definately *not* a jam...

Anyone able to shed some light on this?

Regards,
TH.

Is this the model with two trays and if so does it happen from both trays?
If only from one tray then this is almost certainly a "paper late" condition.
That means the paper is not being picked up quickly enough and the printer
detects this. This would explain both variations of the problem. Probable cause
is a worn paper feed roller (the one that picks the paper from the tray).

This is the single paper tray model. I have cleaned and gently
roughened the paper feed roller (like you had to do on the old LaserJet
4L) but this seems to have had no effect to the reliability of the
paper feed.

The service manual states that this error can also indicate a timing
fault between the paper leaving the pickup roller and getting to the
sync rollers. Unfortunately the manual also states *not* to adjust any
variable resistors, but having said that I haven't found any yet :)

Konica Minolta want £175 to repair this printer, which on top of the
fact it needs £75 worth of toner means it will be cheaper to buy a
Dell 3000cn (currently heavily discounted). I've asked if they could
give me information on timings but they're keeping tight lipped.

Needless to say my next printer won't be a Konica Minolta if they fail
before the 'half-empty' toner cartridges supplied have run out...

Regards,
Jason.
