Kinda OT, how good is Farcry?

UT2004 is what UT2003 *should* have been. All the maps that are in
UT2003 are in 2004, so that would be the way to go. I have both, got
each as soon as they hit the shelves.
McG.

I only have 384MB of ram with an XP2200 with a 128MB Radeon8500LE running in
Win98SE.
It sounds like 2003 was a big disappointment.
Thanks.

No no.. It was good, very good indeed. However, It required far far superior
pc than UT did. Hence not so popular on large Lan networks. UT could be run
at most any pc with a decent cpu (software mode), while Ut2003 would stutter
on a radeon9000 card.
Game play wise it was good, not very different from UT.

Now since 2004 has all the things as 2003 had, and then many more. You can
drive/fly vehicles this time, great for lan gaming.
New weapons, better gfx and most important, it runs smoother than ut2003 on
same system!! It's much better optimised.

If you plan to buy ut2003, i won't recommend against it. Seeing your system,
that might run a bit slow. You need more ram, and that 8500LE is just able
to run it, at normal/good settings @ 1024*768. Provided you overclock it to
275/215 or somthing.

I dl'd the 2003 demo and ran it at 800x600 at it highest settings, including
the sound settings, and it runs very smooth.
I might just spend the $16 or $17 and try it out.
It sounds like the 2004 is way too much for my system.

it might be the other way around :) IF UT2003 works fine with your
system, then it's very likely to run UT2004 even smoother.

Exactly what I meant to say. Ut2004 is much better coded , hence runs
smoother. On same (highest) settings, same res. (1024*768*32, no-aa, no-af)
and same map, antalus, ut2004 is about 12-15fps faster in average on my
system, compaired to ut2003.
It does takes up a LOT of space on harddrive. :( And I hate to have 5 cd in
a game.

Thanks for the heads up.
I misinterpreted what you meant.
Thanks, I will go for the 2004 version.

*YES!* So, for $19.99 or $29.99, which? I say UT2004 at $29.99!!! You
get a better running game and a LOT more goodies to go with it.

Also, if you download the latest patch, you just install everything
(Maximum Install), patch it, and put the CD's up. Not needed to play
the game :)

Cool, if you had both you would see UT2004 is the much better option and
well worth the $10 difference (here in Houston) between the two. You
might luck into a DVD version of the game. Not so many disks this way.

Yeah, I've only seen it advertised, not actually IN the store. If I'd
seen it in the store it'd be here now :)

and......

Just curious.
Is UT2003 worth buying? It is onsale for around $17 which includes S&H from
Best Buy.

Unreal2 was good, not GREAT like the original...

UT2003 sucked ass... UT2004 KICKS ASS!

I paid for UT2003 and I think I racked up about 12~15 hours total
(meanwhile me and my friends played UT-classic for 1-4hrs a day).

I put about 40hrs of UT2004 DEMO before the game came out (30 days).

UT2004 includes the maps of UT2003.

I'm playing with the p4-2.66, 1 gig pc3200, 9800 Pro, Cat 4.5, XP Pro.
Yesterday I cranked all the settings to everything all the way up and
checked that I have a Very High system spec :) That slowed me down a

I am using an AMD 2500 (1.8Ghz) with ATI9800Pro - and everything is on
SuperHigh. But when ya read the Video card reviews of the X800 and
9800s using FarCry and gettings 30~40fps with AMD64s and P4-EEs, ya
know we're in the 20s!
I wonder how many times I got Jack killed already, just gawking at the
scenery?! And indoors, like in a workshop, with tools, compressed gas
bottles, bombs or torpedoes, those things really look real! I knocked a
cylinder over that looked like it was an Oxygen bottle, the valve end
hit on a step....I physically cringed expecting the valve to pop off and
the cylinder take off like a rocket! They did an amazing job with
realistic looking textures in this game!

Agreed... The only game that looks better is HL2... ;)

Playing such games on anything short of a 9800 or 5950 card means your
losing out in effects.

Game still looks nice on older slower cards... but they're not up
there with fluid motion or full details.

Actually, the game engine in UT2004 is better tuned that UT2003.
You'll get better performance.... Besides, the game play in UT2003
just plain sucks.

Just budget an ATI 9800Pro for $170... give it another few weeks and
it'll be $150.

Get the DVD version... Also, install the CD/DVD crack so you don't
need to pop in the disc every time.

FRYs sold the Early limited edition DVD version for $40 (Included a
headset worth about $20)... they sold out within hours.

Thanks for the input about 2004 compared to 2003, but your above comment is
untrue and way out of line.
