Kinda OT, how good is Farcry?

A

Asestar

I read many posts talking about Farcry and it's good thing.
I have to ask how good is this game, gameplay and fun wise? I know it's got
beautiful visuals and so forth, but so did Unreal2, which turned out to be
one booring game. I didn't even finish it (or maybe I did, can't bother to
remember).

Is farcry fun to play?
Is envoirment dynamic and interactive? (Like in Soldier of Fortune where you
could shoot lights, vending machines and pretty much everything). Or is it
more like indestructable type (Like firing rockets against trees won't
damage them and so on)

Odie

Graphics range from average to exceptional. AI, controls, physics,
environment, object interaction, etc are quite good. Audio is average.
Character and story development is more subjective, personally, I thought it
was alright. I have no experience with the game editor but I have heard good
things...time will tell with the mod community...

Although the storyline in linear, the "free-roam" outdoor environments allow
a lot of flexibility for strategy and methods. For example, you may have to
get from A to B but you often have many options such as taking a vehicle,
boat, swim, walk/run, etc and chosing the path -thru the jungle, -follow a
road, -swim, etc. Add in your choice of style (agressive, stealth, etc) and
weapon selections and you have room for many unique gameplay experiences.

I haven't felled any trees with RL or minigun yet, but pretty much
everything man-made is destructible :) Be careful shooting around
compressed gas cylinders, for instance. They can kill you as fast as a
bullet. Also, be careful of munitions lying around or in storage. It
blows up too. The 'ragdoll' physics of the dead can be kinda funny at
times.

Odie is right, in his reply to yours above. I'll also add that the
level of realism graphics wise will depend on just how high end your
system is. If you have a 3ghz rig with a gig of fast ram and a radeon
9800 Pro or higher under XP, then you're likely to be able to see Far
Cry in its full graphical glory. Stupendous. If not, then Pretty Good.
The islands in Far Cry are attractive, you can have some fun just
exploring them. There are plenty of mercenaries to shoot...and they
shoot back too. Their AI is surprisingly good overall. The whole
package works together to make for a very playable game. Even if the
story is kinda thin, the gameplay itself is good!

Far Cry is very good. There is a demo you can try ... though the game is
MUCH better than the demo as the demo came out some time ago. I was playing
this morning and one of the bad guys is fishing as I'm sneaking up on him
.... you know casting and the whole bit ... very clever game and very good
AI. You can't blow all the trees but you can blow up a lot of stuff and
shoot up coke machines they will start sparking. SOF and SOF 2 are my
favorite FPS and I put Far Cry right there with it. It demands a lot from
your computer.

Hi,

Just my pov.

Have had Far Cry about 4 weeks.

Am about 80-90% through it (I think).

Apart from the visuals, which are exceedingly good - the nice aspect is the
AI of the mercenaries and the inevitable mutant thingys.

Object physics are pretty good - you blow up fuel tanks/canisters - which
then cause crates, trees, masonry etc. to topple.

The mutant stuff is a little reminiscent of Return to Castle Wolfenstein and
in truth is a little bit of a disappointment, but to compensate their speed
and ganging up A.I. is quite something.

You know the feeling - when something comes at you the first time, so bloody
fast - you are hitting keys and also pushing the chair back to get out of
the way fast.

Unreal 2 was a dreadful disappointment - and those loading times - and......

Far Cry for me is very good - even non-FPS literates standing behind me
saying..." golly - that looks frightfully good....(or expletives to that
effect)".

IMHO - HL2 & Doom3 are not here - Far Cry is. It is money well spent.

The top-most thing is the A.I. of the opponents - very good.

Also it is apparently mod-friendly- which should bode well.

I'm just a software Tech. Author (bioinformatics) and a FPS fan - I'm not
connected with the games industry.

Gets my vote.

I am crawling thru the vegetation bordering the beach rendered exactly from the paradise
islands in the equatorial heaven's - i spot up on the side of the valley hill to my right
front at 300 yards, a sand bag bunker with a heavy weapon manned by a Mercenary. - he
hasn't spotted me. I carefully and slowly raise my parkerized whembley-vicker sniper
rifle, until the 40x scope focus's to my crack shot eyeball. At this range and the at the
height of my intended target - the casaba resting just above the kevlar flak jacket - i
miss, twice i miss, my situation down here behind and seemingly buried in the foliage is
getting critical, i'm losing my edge. The radar screen is indicating five DEATH BRIGADE
blips closing and in the yellow. One more shot - got him, now i can get the hell out of
here - my passage is secure from above.

I crawl as fast as i can to the left valley hill side just where the vegetation can offer
me the best cover. The yellow blips have stopped moving towards me. I count five. I know
the Carrier is down this narrow valley somewhere. My next destination - that has five
votes against me making it.

I move forward, having reloaded on my trek across the valley floor i have one signature
round for each blip, i muse to myself.

Crawling is the order of the day, and coming into view as I slowly move forward is the
remains of a Japanese zero which the island jungle hasn’t quite claimed for its own. I
lose the blips on my radar screen. I stop, weight the situation, and change to a crouch, i
bring the binoculars i snagged from the table a few huts back to my eyes. The sound
proximity indicator show movement of five on the other side of the zero. Three close and
two farther away, in fact those two are green on my radar, safe enough - for now. I had
completely forgotten about the intense island jungle heat that has trapped me in these
clothes.

I exchange the binoculars for the scope 2x click 4x there I have one – KRAA—ACK – missed
him HELL!! I go prone again with just enough of a fall as to not shake my new close
friend the jungle bush. DAMN!! From this position behind the zero I get no radar blips. I
slowly backup the hill a little at a time.

No blips. I switch to my binoc’s again THERE to the left of the zero sound movement.

I bring up my sights and pan to the left of the zero NOTHING! I pan back lower to the
foliage there he is head low a slow crouching walk closing in on me – he doesn’t see me
but he is looking. KRAA-ACK! One more down. I quickly get back up to a crouch and swing my
sniper rifle to the right of the zero YES! KRAA-ACK! Winged one – he jumps back behind the
zero.

I have them pined down behind the zero, I go prone again. I hear one yell GRENADE! And I
see it being Lobed over from behind the zero and hit the ground far in front of me and
roll down the hill away from me KERR-BOOM! It goes off.

Whew Now THIS ! is AI !!!!!

I heard the panic in the AI character’s voices – “WHERE IS HE” “COME ON IN”

“YOUR NUMBERS UP” stuff like that.

The day was mine.

Right now in the FAR CRY game I’m prone behind some bushes on the left valley wall
overlooking the Carrier. IF you go for this method of game play. Then I strongly suggest
you use the binoculars and listen to those six baddies conversations. Heh. I sniped the
“action” man first.

might I add that the shader in the ATI 9800pro brings a level of Paradise beauty to this
game. I should know - most of my traveling is to Hawaii, Tahiti, Canary Islands, Guam,
Samoa. I am truly impressed with the 9800pro and Far Cry.

If you have an ATI you've GOT to plat this game.

and no i not affiliated with ATI at all - in any way shape or form - however; after this

That's a piece of technology that's a work of art, the binocs :) But
that sniper rifle, now that's a joy. If you get really GOOD at using it
in Far Cry, you'd do well as a sniper IRL ;) You don't really get that
much movement to counter. I've had a couple of the Mercs sneak up on
ME while I was sneaking up on them! If they can figure where your shots
are originating, they'll find you. That's cool too :) Keeps you
thinking and cautious. I enjoy sniping them so much I forget to use a
grenade when there's a cluster of em. I found an MP5, now that's a toy!

If anyone remembers on the very first level of the original Doom
there was a section near the beginning where you climb up some steps
and look out of a large window/balcony towards some dense jungle
canopy rising up a nearby mountain side.
I wished I could open a door and carry on blasting my way into that
jungle. So the dense jungle warfare I dreamed about all those years

You didn't play Serious Sam, The Second Encounter? Nice jungle there
too. But not on the order you see in Far Cry. Far Cry is so much
better it hurts!

I've hardly played any FPS games for 2 or 3 years now so I come to Far Cry

good thing as the Far Cry experience has been made all the more awesome for

Yeah, Unreal 2 was ultimately just standard FPS fare. I'm glad I waited
for it to drop down to $15 before buying it. Not a bad game, but I must
agree about the load times. Absolutely atrocious. I found myself having
to reload more than a few times on the game's final level and that ruined
what otherwise might have been an exciting finish.

First, I like to thank everyone for such good replies on this OT topic..

Now, I'm mostly an Adventure, Rpg and Sim/race gamer. Mostly enjoy
slow-paced games like Gothic2, Morrowind, Dues Ex 1, Neverwinter+exp, Diablo
all 4 of them, Sacred, Syberia1 2, Longestjourney, Sleeping dragon, GTA
series, IL2, Fs2002+FS2004, RaceDriver, GP4, StreetLegal and so on.

Of all the Fps i played (and i did tried most of them up to 2003) i enjoyed
Sof1, sof2, Operation Flashpoint!, Unreal Tournament (Lan-parties), Swat 3,
DeltaForce 1 and BHD, Undying, serious sam1, Freedom fighter, and maybe a
few more.

FPS Games that I wasted my time (played a few days, then got fed up) and
money on (excluding those I borrowed from friends, and disliked):
Unreal2
Serious Sam2 (boring, pointless)
Devestation (just bad)
Half Life (just did not like the movement and envoirment, played in 2000)
Enter the matrix
Alien Vs Predator 2 (too difficult, dark)
Army Men (it was fps, not those rts)
Codename outbreak (what a disaster)
Delta Force (except Df-1, and Df-BHD - those were very good, others crap)

I might give FarCry a chance, as soon as it drops in price a bit :)

One more question: My laptop, with Pentium4C 3.2GHz, 800FSB w/HT, 512DDR
pc2700 and mRadeon9600 pro 128mb DDR memory. Can It run Farcry at medium

Actually my favorite FPS is a First Person Sneaker "Thief II" and
my second would be "Delta Force - Landwarrior" so "Far Cry" is a
real treat. There seems to be the right combination of elements to
make this game great, in my view. In some ways this is what "IGI"
seemed to be trying for, but couldn't quite reach.

--snip to relevant ---

I think so. You may even try some of the pretty stuff on High. Here's
what I have, and as of yesterday, I have everything in the game turned
on Very High and System Spec Very High and 1280x1024-32bits. It isn't a
top of the line rig, and I do find some choppiness now in scenes where
there is a lot of action/NPC's. That means a firefight :) I did this
just to see if it would run this way and if so, what it looked like. It
looks incredible!!!! It's the only game (so far) to beat my rig into
submission! Hah! I don't want to spoil the game, so I'll just say that
the visuals can be stunning.
My rig in current form is:
P4-2.66/533 fsb (yours is faster!) Gigabyte GA8i848P-L, 1 gig PC3200 @
333mHz (will clock 400 when I install 800fsb processor) Radeon 9800
Pro-128 (Rev. F), XP Pro SP1.
I haven't actually checked FPS in it. I'll look up the switch and put
that up too.
Honestly, I didn't expect Far Cry to run fully maxed out on my system as
it is, because it's below their definition of Very High in System Spec.
Surprisingly, it actually performed pretty well :)

The game is HARD on video cards... but it looks great! No GIBS thou

Game MUST be played at night.

Remember: In the USA - it is dangeroud to draw or write about Heir Bush in a negative way. The police or SS are called, people threaten to kill you. (What country is this again?)

- 15yr old boy in Washington was disciplined for drawing such images.
- White House blows cover of an undercover agent because her husband said there were no WMD (before the USA started the war) - her job was finding terrorist. (This makes sense?)
God bless the land of the free. Where you can burn the Constitution... Ashcroft does it every day.

I'm playing with the p4-2.66, 1 gig pc3200, 9800 Pro, Cat 4.5, XP Pro.
Yesterday I cranked all the settings to everything all the way up and
checked that I have a Very High system spec :) That slowed me down a
bit! :)
The visuals are stunning. If you're in heavy brush, or up on a rock in
heavy brush, you can track the mercs progress without actually seeing
them...look for the moving foliage :) If they get too close, quick
switch to the .357, one round to the face and they leave ya alone
permanently.
I wonder how many times I got Jack killed already, just gawking at the
scenery?! And indoors, like in a workshop, with tools, compressed gas
bottles, bombs or torpedoes, those things really look real! I knocked a
cylinder over that looked like it was an Oxygen bottle, the valve end
hit on a step....I physically cringed expecting the valve to pop off and
the cylinder take off like a rocket! They did an amazing job with
realistic looking textures in this game!
