My typing seems to be a lot faster than what my computer can keep up with.
There is a delay of some seconds before it catches up - this problem started
occurring about a month ago. Any suggestions?

If you have MS Office installed, it might be the Language bar causing the
delay.

If you have the language bar running in the taskbar (properties, toolbars,
check it to show it) you may have the mic listening for speech input, causing
a delay in typing. I suggest going to the "Regional and Language settings"
applet in control panel Language Tab, Details button, Preferences, Language
Bar button put a check in the box to "turn off advanced text services"
